The Shift from Collars to Harnesses
When I adopted my first dog, Mango, a small 10-pound Chihuahua-Rat Terrier mix, I didn’t think much about the collar and leash setup. Coming from a rural upbringing, I had never had to use them much. But now, living in a busy city, it became clear that her safety depended on it. However, after several unsettling moments where Mango’s collar tugged at her neck during our walks, I realized that a better solution was needed.
The Risks of Using Dog Collars
Many pet owners, especially those with small dogs, may not realize the potential harm that collars can cause. Tugging on a leash attached to a collar puts pressure on the dog’s neck, which can lead to serious injuries such as trachea collapse or even strangulation. In fact, each year, around 26,000 dogs suffer from collar-related accidents, many of which could have been prevented with safer alternatives.
The Benefits of Harnesses
After witnessing the strain Mango’s collar put on her delicate neck, I switched to a harness. This change was life-altering, not just for her comfort but for her safety. Harnesses distribute pressure across the dog’s body, relieving the neck and reducing the risk of injury. For small dogs like Mango, and now Louis, my current rescue, harnesses have proven to be the best solution for ensuring safe and enjoyable walks.
Finding the Right Fit
Not every dog will love wearing a harness right away. When I adopted Louis, he had a strong aversion to step-in harnesses. After some trial and error, I found the Didog over-the-head harness, which Louis took to immediately. This solution made our walks stress-free, and I knew I was protecting his health without risking his safety.
A Simple Change for Longevity
Switching to a harness isn’t just about convenience—it's about preserving your dog’s health. By preventing unnecessary pressure on their neck, you’re ensuring a longer, healthier life for your pet. Louis now looks forward to his walks, and I rest easier knowing that his trachea and neck are protected.
